How One Act of Kindness Provided Food for the Homeless

“We have come dangerously close to accepting the homeless situation as a problem that we just can’t solve.” – Linda Lingle, American Politician.

Feet Forward is a non-profit organization in Boulder, CO whose mission is to feed the surrounding homeless community. When they experienced a shortage of food, a local Gunbarrel restaurant employee stepped up to fill the need: Domino’s Pizza assistant manager, Amanee Howard, took matters into her own hands with her wallet.

Typically, Shawn Camden, the founder of Sancho’s Mexican Restaurant in Gunbarrel, supplies Feet Forward with food through a monthly event called “Taco Tuesday.” However, when he realized on Monday that staff and supply shortages would prevent him from serving the local homeless of Boulder, he called up Howard at Domino’s—two doors down—to see if she could help.

After considering covering half the cost, Howard decided to pay the total $301 out of her own pocket to cover 25 pizzas—which she boxed herself—plus supplies. Her generosity provided hot lunches to approximately 70 homeless individuals on a cold, snowy Colorado day. “It never occurred to me not to help out,” Howard said.

She added, “I paid for the pizzas, but it’s absolutely free to be nice to people.”

Amanee Howard is no stranger to homelessness. Having spent a year, herself being homeless after moving from Las Vegas to Colorado, she understands how one act of kindness, even something as simple as a hot meal, can provide hope and make a world of difference to those in need.
