How A Young Cancer Survivor Decided To Pay It Forward

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller

Since being declared cancer-free three years ago, seventeen-year-old Texas-native, Maddie Barber, has been pursuing a newfound passion—raising hogs on her family’s farm in Boerne, TX.

Barber is a member of the Future Farmers of America, an agricultural organization dedicated to preparing America’s youth for careers in the farming industry. During a recent event, the Kendall County Junior Livestock Show, Ms. Barber planned to appropriate the donations she received by showing her hogs to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Typically, in these livestock show events, a young person can raise anywhere between $2,000 and $4,000. Although most youth decide to put their money into a college fund, that was not Barber’s intention. Astoundingly, the donors at the charity livestock show went above and beyond her wildest expectations—generous givers donated a total of $30,500 to her St. Jude’s fund.

In the Washington Post article about the event, Maddie stated “I was really in shock that it went so high.”

She is grateful to have a second chance in life and wants to share that same hope with children battling cancer by generously donating the $30,500 to cancer research at St. Jude’s. Maddie Barber is living proof that you are never too young to make a difference in this world.
