Even the Smallest Act of Kindness Can Have a Ripple Effect

“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Around you, every day, you might see hundreds of people walking around carrying shopping bags. For the elderly, bearing even a small weight can prove a major challenge. Needless to say, when a young person offers to help, more often than not, the senior will accept. Except, the offers are few and far between. Yet, one small act of kindness from a school boy touched the lives of thousands of people.

The unnamed boy saw an elderly lady carrying heavy bags and offered to help. She accepted the offer, perhaps for no other reason than realizing that a youngster would be easily able to bear the load she struggled with. Regardless, the boy dropped off her bags at her home. Touched by his gesture, she decided to write a letter to the head teacher of the boy’s school. which she recognized from the kid’s uniform.

The teacher published the letter in a newsletter to all parents. Moreover, he read the letter during the school assembly. However, he kept the name of the boy anonymous. Despite the fact that no one knows who performed the small act of kindness, the story touched many people. According to the head teacher at that school, they are receiving reports of other students looking for opportunities to help people in their community.

The interesting aspect of this entire situation is that the head teacher could have ignored the letter. The lady decided to write the letter because she recognized the school the kid attended. If either of them did not make the decision they did that day, the small act might not have created the ripple effect it ultimately did. You can read all about the incident and the impact it created here.

Sheltering Grace appreciates the fact that even a small gesture can have a ripple effect. No one should ignore an act of kindness because of its magnitude. This reason is why appreciation for everyone who does a good thing is important.
