“If this poster were a homeless youth, most people wouldn’t even bother to look down” – Poster strategically placed on the lower side of a building and down to the sidewalk [as though someone was sitting against the wall] at the cross-section of two sidewalks.
Many communities are doing their best to address homelessness. That concern, along with pandemic challenges, has caused a lot of innovative approaches from community leaders over the last few years. The latest innovation was unveiled in Newark, NJ on March 8th.
Homelessness Czar Sakinah Hoyte joyfully introduced 24 residents to their new home in Newark Hope Village on Newark Street. The homes are part of a 90-day pilot program to support those residents in transitioning from the street to permanent housing at other locations.
These homes were designed by a California nonprofit called Homes 4 the Homeless. Built to code, they used seven shipping containers to create 20 dorm-style rooms with bunk beds, a heater and a small dresser. Two structures on site also have shower rooms.
Once a homeless person is approved for the 90-day program, they are given a voucher and then United Community Corporation steps in to provide supportive services until their permanent housing is finalized. Newark Working Kitchens has partnered with the city to pay restaurants to make meals for the residents as well.
