Historic Winter Storm Prompts Inspirational Acts Of Kindness

“If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” – Mother Teresa

Everyone in the U.S. has been keeping an eye on Texas over the last week as they slowly recover from their worst winter storm in almost a century. As power grids failed and water pipes burst across various sections of the state, communities immediately went into survival mode to find warmth, food, and shelter.

Trying to survive in uncertain conditions will either bring out the best in people or the worst. In Austin, TX, many neighborhoods choose to band together and the best in people began to shine. KXAN NBC News released an article a few days ago titled, “Historic winter storm bringing neighbors together, prompting inspirational acts of kindness” which contained stories from local residents about how neighbors were helping neighbors in amazing ways.

Below are a few highlights of the stories that were sent to the news station:

  1. Food delivery driver found a home with Austin couple during winter storms.
  2. Homeowners came together to dig out neighborhood road in Leander.
  3. University of Texas professors helped pay for students’ meals during winter storms.
  4. A neighborhood resident spent the day driving people around to get what they needed.
  5. A grocery store that lost power and couldn’t take credit cards gave away food to everyone in the store, regardless of whether they had the cash to pay for it.

When people resist the urge to look out for #1 (self), and instead do what they can to share resources and keep an eye out for how they can help others around them, communities can’t help but be blessed and become better in the process.
