The holiday season provides the perfect opportunity for performing small yet meaningful acts of kindness. Around this time, people are looking for ways to make others happy. The less privileged among us are the ones who need this kindness the most. An Irish school took this concept to the next level, encouraging their students to spread some joy this Christmas season. At Gaelscoil Mhíchíl Uí Choileáin, students will not have to do homework during December.
Instead, they have to perform small acts of kindness for their relatives as well as the wider community. The school went the extra mile to make students accountable, having them write down their acts in a Kindness Diary, which their parents have to sign. Interestingly, this is the third consecutive year that the school launched this initiative (last year’s theme was gratitude). Parents also bought into the initiative and are encouraging their children to take an active part. You can learn more about this story here.
During the initiative, students receive different tasks for different days of the week. For instance, on Monday, they would have to call or visit a relative they know is lonely, or any elderly person in the community. The students can even send a card to them. On Tuesday, they would have to participate in chores around the house. The school also introduces a similar program during the summer in June.
