“Unexpected kindness is the most powerful, least costly, and most underrated agent of human change.” -Bob Kerrey, Former United States Senator
You never know what a day may bring forth.
Chicago native Anthony Perry, 20 years old, thought it was a day like every other as he got off at his usual Chicago Red Line train stop on the way home from work. He heard a commotion, then realizing someone was in mortal danger, he barely had time to think before springing into action. An unidentified man had just fallen onto the electrified rail and lay dying as a crowd gathered around the scene and began recording the terrifying event.
Perry jumped down and hopped over the third rail to pull the gentleman to safety and began performing CPR on him. Because of Perry’s quick thinking, the gentleman is expected to survive the fall and subsequent electrocution.
In an interview with USA Today, Perry explained, “The guy didn’t have control of his body so I really felt like if I don’t help him, who will help? Everybody was just standing around recording.”
Early Walker, a Chicagoan and founder of the anti-violence group called I’m Telling Don’t Shoot, caught wind of Anthony Perry’s heroic and selfless act. After finally tracking him down, Walker began a conversation with Perry and found out he had been riding the train to and from work due to not having a working car.
Walker was so impressed by the young man’s selflessness and maturity, he decided to repay his kind deed with a $25 gasoline gift card—and the keys to a 2009 Audi A8.
Walker told Perry, “We wanted to literally show our appreciation because we need more people like you. We need more Anthonys in the world.”
