“Carter Kindness,” Making a Difference in Whitehall

“Young people, when informed and empowered, when they realize that what they do truly makes a difference, can indeed change the world.” – Jane Goodall, English primatologist

It is rare to see a child take it upon themselves to make a difference in the lives of those in need; however, it makes so much sense. Young children often see what needs to be done, even before the grown-ups, having not been jaded by years of cynicism. Their hearts are still very open and generous.

Nine-year old Carter Kefauver of Whitehall, OH, began a movement of kindness in his community that started out small, but is growing and making tremendous impacts. It all started when his mother decided to “pay it forward” by giving back some money she had won in a drawing. This inspired Carter to start giving “sprinkles” (his lingo for gifts of kindness) to others in random acts of kindness.

“I wanted to do what my heart desires,” Carter stated in an interview for The Columbus Dispatch.

Carter got his parents on board with his idea. Then, what started out as $5 gift cards here and there and a few notes of encouragement, turned into a U-Haul full of Clif Bars for front line workers to surprise them on Nurse’s Day (May 6th). The nutrition bars were graciously donated by FST Logistics to Carter’s nonprofit, Carter Kindness.

Carter’s parents have been supportive throughout the entire process of their son starting Carter Kindness, which they basically run out of the family’s dining room. It is their homebase of sorts, filled with boxes of snacks and craft supplies.

Carter’s father, Jason Kefauver, commented that, “This world is so set on tearing itself apart, but this is our little bubble of positivity.”
