Life for most Americans has changed in significant ways because of the unexpected pandemic. Despite the challenges most people have faced, many have chosen to continue being generous with their time and finances to help others around them.
A great example of this is a group of high school students in Houston, Texas who attend the architecture and engineering program at Kingwood Park High School. They partnered with a Veteran’s services agency over two years ago to build “tiny homes” for Veterans in their community. It’s called the Students Helping Veterans project. The first recipient of a tiny home was U.S. Marine Corp Veteran, Edward Rodriguez. He had a stroke two years ago, which ended up tearing apart his life. He was given his home in 2019.
The students began building a second home after that, but were forced to stop working on it for many months earlier this year when shelter-in-place orders took effect. The students refused to forget their commitment, however, and finally went back to work once those orders were lifted. They finally finished building it in October 2020.
These tiny homes are just about 209 square feet and have everything a person needs to feel comfortable and safe. KVUE News covered the ribbon cutting event, interviewing KPHS senior, Parker Ryan who stated, “Being able to pick up a veteran off the street and give him a home to live in and grow is just amazing to me.”
