“Where are the amber waves of grain
When one of our homeless native sons has hunger pain?
Under the overpass they build a fire for heat
They can’t remember when they had a meal to eat.”
– John Lawry, a rock musician formerly with the band Petra
Thanks to modern technology, a homeless community in Duluth, MN will have some of their needs met due to a viral Facebook Live video from a 7-year-old boy named Grayson Zebro. What’s even more interesting is that the video was the result of his mother taking the time to have a conversation with him about homelessness after he learned that some people were living without a roof over their heads.
The saying “from the mouth of babes” (referring to child-like wisdom) really rings true here. Grayson innately knew that one person can make a powerful difference in the world around him. Speaking from the heart, he shared on FB Live, “Ok, so, did you guys know that there are homeless people in the world? They don’t have houses…”
How can anyone resist a plea for help like that when most of us take it for granted that we live in warm houses with a refrigerator and cabinets full of food? Donations began to flood in quickly after his video went live. Despite the generosity of everyone involved, however, Grayson’s mom recognizes that it is just a band-aid on the problem rather than a solution. Because of that, she has been asking everyone to contact their elected officials to do something to eradicate the homeless challenges in their communities in addition to whatever they donate.
As Grayson and his mom tag-team to meet the needs of this typically overlooked community, people everywhere are getting a lesson on how to view the world through child-like eyes of possibility, rather than averting their eyes when the needs of the homeless cross their path.
