Nursing Students Serve Homeless

Within any community, there are always people who have and those who have not. Communities that collaborate to share resources are those which have a deeper impact across all sections of society. One shining example of this is 500 Nursing students from the Georgia State University system who provide 35,000 unpaid hours of service annually to a variety of nonprofit organizations within Metro Atlanta.

Students from Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions have been offering their services to one of their neighbors, SafeHouse Outreach, for more than 10 years. Safehouse Outreach supports homeless men and women into a place of stability and independent living. Its mission is to restore lives through faith, love, and compassionate service.

According to an article on GSU.edu, “Twice a week, nursing students give foot care and take blood pressure readings for the SafeHouse clients, called ‘friends.’ Student nurses use foot care time for health evaluations and interpersonal connections.” The interpersonal connection displayed by those students is essential to build trust and showcase care while serving their homeless neighbors.
