“The willingness of America’s veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” – Jeff Miller
The number of homeless veterans in the U.S. runs into the tens of thousands. Simply put, homelessness among the men and women who serve our country is rampant. This issue requires immediate attention, and a group in Brunswick, Georgia, is on a mission to help local vets who need assistance.
The Golden Isles Veterans Village will collaborate with the Nine-Line Foundation to set up a village for veterans in Brunswick. Peter Vivencio, a local pastor who volunteers just across G street, explained that many veterans head over to the Manna House for food and shelter. Hence, the problem requires a solution, and this is where the idea of tiny homes comes into the picture.
The idea behind the project is building ‘tiny’ homes which provide adequate shelter for homeless veterans. The plan is to construct up to 40 homes, along with a community center where the vets can congregate. According to the Nine-Line Foundation, they are stocking the materials required for building the tiny homes and High school students worked on setting up the materials. The land for the project is a donation from the city, which gives the initiative a leg-up from the outset. Moreover, the project received more than $180,000 worth of donations. At Sheltering Grace, we believe that even the smallest gesture of kindness, especially for the homeless, deserves recognition. In the case of the Veterans’ Village planned for the historic district of Brunswick, the idea is noble and will address the problems the homeless vets are facing. Tiny or large, a home is a home and helps get the vets off the street where they are as vulnerable as anyone. Therefore, they should receive all the support and assistance necessary for effective execution and completion of the project.
